THAILAND
WMD
For a number of years, the Watershed Management Division (WMD) of Thailand's Royal Forest Department has had interactions with the Asia Forest Network. Collaboration between these two organizations came to a fore when WMD was selected by AFN as a beneficiary under its Community Forest Management Support Project.
In 2002, the National Park, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation Department (DNP) was created under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. This resulted from a redefinition of the Royal Forest Department's functions with regard to forestry activities. Protection and conservation now come under the NPWPC Department's jurisdiction while commercial forestry activities remain under RFD.
WMD staff were then reassigned under the DNP and formed what is now the Office of Watershed Conservation and Management (WCM). The relationship therefore between AFN and WCM is not something new but one already well-established.
