Forest for Poverty Reduction
In April 2006, the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission held its 21st session in Dehradun, India. FAO, as the APFC secretariat, organized a pre-session workshop on Forests and Poverty Reduction wherein AFN presented "Forests for Poverty Reduction: Opportunities for the Asia-Pacific Region".

The workshop aimed to:

(1) increase awareness of links between forests and poverty;
(2) identify barriers preventing the forest sector from contributing efficiently and effectively to poverty reduction; and
(3) describe actions that maximize contributions of forestry to poverty reduction.

To achieve workshop objectives, the authors:

(1) cited the role of forests in reducing poverty;
(2) identified some impacts of reduced poverty on environmental sustainability;
(3) reviewed different definitions of poverty in relation to forest-dependent populations;
(4) related stories on poverty in forestlands; and
(5) identified opportunities for moving from poverty to sustainability, citing incipient actions and challenges faced.
